During the pandemic, the Montreux Jazz Festival had a contest for its 2021 poster. The theme was RESTART. The poster illustrates this idea inspired by music sheets and notations: the restart from the beginning of a part is indicated on the sheets with D.C. (da capo), meaning "from the start". This indication is often used alongside the musical repetition mark notated ":||" that points out the bars that need to be started over, in this case, it was a visual metaphor for the restart of the festival, the music, and the good vibes it brings along. The poster plays with this idea and showcases the name of the festival lettered in black and white, inspired by the lines of musical sheets. The intricate rhythms and often improvisation of jazz are translated into the poster through the overlapping letters.
